Principal Technical Writer / Communications Engineer

Pay rate: $70-80/hr (DOE)

Assignment Start Date: ASAP

Assignment Type: 6 Month Contract (Potential to be Extended or Converted)

Location: San Jose, CA

Position Description:

As a Principal Technical Writer/Editor in the Design IP group, you will be responsible for writing and editing collateral for various IP. You will be responsible for planning, organizing, writing, and editing the technical specifications, engineering schematics, application notes and user guides. Minimum of 7-10 years of experience as a Technical Writer. You must have a deep understanding of the Technical Publication processes ranging from doc planning/writing/publication of various user documents and experience with content reuse techniques, structured writing, as well as a broad knowledge of XML, HTML, and standard publications software.

You will interface with the Design Engineering team to review technical specifications and to distill that information into user focused content. You will also collect customer feedback and collaborate with the Design and Application Engineering team to improve content based on the feedback. You will also participate in improving doc processes and the customer experience. You will work independently, interacting and collaborating with multi-site teams and you will deliver high quality collateral by demonstrating strict adherence to the style guide and other doc-processes followed by the group.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Manage all work flow to deliver IP product documentation on schedule.

  • Work in partnership with Product Marketing and Engineering Leads to project plan and develop high quality, best-in class IP product documentation.

  • Work under the direction of the Manager to define best-in-class product documentation requirements,

  • Provide regular internal communication of product documentation plans and status to interested stakeholders.

  • Participate in editorial reviews


  • Writing Samples are Required Upon Submittal

  • Experience with Adobe FrameMaker is required

  • Bachelor’s in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or Computer Science

  • Familiarity with SOC design, DDR, USB 3.0, PCIE protocols a plus

  • Ability to organize documentation, learn complex concepts, and explain concepts and instructions clearly and concisely

  • Understand structured, task-based writing and able to write in a minimalist style

  • Knowledge of network administration, storage administration, and security administration in virtualized environments is a plus

  • Ability to do common tasks at the UNIX/Linux command line.

  • Familiarity with at least one version control system such as git or Perforce.

  • Ability to find and efficiently interview technical experts in engineering, product management, and customer support.

  • A record of successful cross-functional collaboration

  • Project management skills to effectively track and manage assignments, including the ability to estimate, prioritize, and organize tasks effectively

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills having worked in a team environment

  • Experience with DocBook, DITA, and scripting languages is a plus

  • Experience writing technical documentation for Semiconductor IPs or SoC designs would be a plus
